2008 AMERICAN EXPRESS® WOMEN'S GOLF MONTH CELEBRATED RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
More than 105,000 people across the country have been introduced or re-introduced to the game over the past four years and the event is projected to have contributed $2.7 million to the golf industry. Golfer Girl Magazine advisor, Suzy Whaley served as one of the key spokeswomen for the even.
American Express® Women’s Golf Month seeks to provide women and girls (14 and older) the opportunity to learn, re-learn or play golf in a fun and friendly environment. This past June, participating golf facilities offered complimentary instruction and were encouraged to host other activities, such as networking receptions, golf rules and etiquette seminars, club fittings and equipment demonstrations, golf apparel fashion shows, luncheons, playing experiences and contests.
It appears that the program is working. According to the 2007 National Golf Foundation Golf Participation Study, the number of female golfers in the US has grown to 6.4 million, an eight percent increase since 2002, including nearly one million juniors (ages 6-17) and over 5.4 million women.
THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA GOLF ASSOCIATIONS HELP MAKE GOLF AFFORDABLE FOR JUNIORS
The SCGA Foundation’s Youth On Course program is promoting the affordability and accessibility of golf for youth by establishing one- to two-dollar course access and one-dollar range balls at golf facilities’ during off-peak hours. Currently, the participants are all certified by junior golf organizations for golf rules, etiquette and ability, but also must be part of a life skills or educational program, such as The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum. However, Youth On Course is expanding so rapidly, some predict it will be open to any junior by 2010.
Through a partnership with the NCGA Foundation, Youth On Course is a California statewide initiative. Both Foundations believe that golf teaches integrity, character and responsibility in a way that few other activities can match.
